You know that phrase that we all have used when just about to dominate an opponent, well Nintendo is trying to trademark that phrase. "It's on like Donkey Kong".
For some reason Nintendo thinks it should have exclusive rights to that phrase even though they weren't the originators of it. As I think back, it seems to me as though popular culture made that phrase popular, albeit from playing DK for Super Nintendo.
What I can tell you is that I used that phrase probably ten times a day for the duration of my Sophomore year of college as I tried to beat the DK game every afternoon after class. That shows that not only is it a popular thing to say but also that I suck at the game since I actually never beat it. Bummer.
The funniest thing about this whole story is that the phrase "it's on like donkey kong" is actually listed in Urban Dictionary meaning "A phrase to denote that it's time to throw down or complete at a high level".
According to that definition, I can see a small college adopting the phrase as a locker room chant before the big rivalry game.
